Instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA) is based on the irradiation of samples in a reactor neutron flux and the measurementof induced radioactivity using high-resolution gamma ray spectrometry. The technique has good sensitivity for a wide range of elements,including many of the first row transition elements, rare earths, alkali, and alkaline earths. When coupled with X-ray fluorescenceanalysis, the two techniques provide excellent data for studying minor variations among geochemically coherent pairs of elements; forexample, yttrium and the rare earth elements, zirconium-hafnium, niobium-tantalum, uranium-thorium. The method has been appliedto geochemical and soil studies.
